What is Halal?

Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. In reference to food, it is the dietary standard, as prescribed in the Qur'an (the Muslim scripture). The opposite of halal is haram, which means unlawful or prohibited. Halal and haram are universal terms that apply to all facets of life. These terms are commonly used in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and food contact materials.

What does halal food and vitamins mean? To make them halal, these products must be free from:

- Swine/Pork and its by-products

- Animals improperly slaughtered or dead before slaughtering

- Alcoholic drinks and intoxicants

- Carnivorous animals, birds of prey and certain other animals

- Foods contaminated with any of the above products

Muslims eat to maintain a strong and healthy physique in order to be able to contribute their knowledge and effort for the welfare of the society. Muslims are supposed to make an effort to obtain the best quality nutritionally. It is mentioned in a Hadith that the prayer of a person is rejected by Allah if the food consumed is prohibited (haram).

What is Halal Make up:

According to Islam, halal products are considered acceptable and haram products are unacceptable. In order for makeup to be considered halal and not haram, it must not contain any ingredients forbidden by Islamic law. This typically means halal makeup products cannot contain alcohol, pork, pork byproducts, or any byproducts of other animals not slaughtered according to Islamic tradition. As long as the makeup adheres to these basic rules, it is considered halal and acceptable for Muslims to use. Many commercial lines of makeup are considered haram because they contain alcohol and pork byproducts, such as porcine (anything pig).

Why Henna For Hair:

~ Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best things to use to change grey hair are henna and katam.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1753; Abu Dawood, 4205; Ibn Maajah, 3622).

~ Al-Tirmidhi said: the hadeeth is hasan saheeh). Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) dyed his hair with henna and katam. (Narrated by Muslim, 2341).

~  At ohsohalal.com.au, we offer everything henna! Providing 100% natural and organic henna products for hair color, beard dye, cosmetic stains for the lips, and nails. All of our henna contains natural and organic ingredients and is completely Vegan, NO PPDs or harsh chemicals. We believe that henna is natures way of saying: It's OK to color and dye your hair; It's OK to decorate your body with henna ; It's OK to feel good about yourself and look your best.

~ No other substance, whether natural or synthetic, will strengthen the hair and give it shine as effectively as henna. The Henna plant is called "lawsonia",and is completely natural. Henna imparts both color and condition to the hair.  Henna, especially when mixed with other plant products, is actually good for your hair. It can leave your hair thicker and shinier. You can use it repeatedly to get the color you want without damaging your hair. Henna may also protect your hair from sun, wind and chlorine.

~ Henna works by penetrating the hair shaft and binding to the keratin protein bonds. Henna strengthens and smooths the cuticle, thickens your hair and makes it resistant to breakage. Henna contains hennotannic acid, a natural astringent that tightens the surface of your scalp and strengthens the follicles grasp on each hair. This also results in far less hair fall.

What Does Wudu Friendly Henna Nail Stain Mean:

Ingredients: Henna, Indigo (Katam), Barberry Root Powder, Beeswax, Herbal Coloring, Grain alcohol, Glycerin, Flower Scent and Mineral Water.

From Supplier:

The Nail Stain is made of henna extract, and it is not a coating on nail, it actually stains the nail, and therefore the nail remains natural and porous. This results in no disturbance in Waddu or Namaz performance after applying the nail stain. This is the same with the lip stains

In Regards to the ingredient-Grain Alcohol- (a natural plant based alcohol that can only be used to preserve cosmetics that are organic and natural)

The extract of my reading is in First Hadith of Sahih Bukhari (Hadith means " saying of Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him) "Actions Are Judged By Intentions"

Some major Hanafi scholars of this century, including Muhammad Bakhit al-Muti'i of Egypt and Badr ad-Din al-Hasani of Damascus, have given formal legal opinions that they are pure (tahir) because they are not produced or intended as intoxicants. There is an aspect of cosmetic alcohol which would seem to differentiate it from beverages fundamentally enough to place it in a different class where the rulings of both the impurity and prohibitiveness of beverages do not apply. That aspect is the fact that cosmetics and beverages are not made for intoxication, nor are conducive to it, nor are used towards it, nor are they made for consumption. In other words: cosmetic alcohol is essentially a different substance than khamr. That is why the position of permitting it seems strongest, some even permitting the consumption of cough syrup containing alcohol for the same reason. And Allah knows best.

Henna Lip and Henna Nail Stains:

Both these products acts as Natural Dye and not as Coating, so skin of lips and nails remain naked (un-coated or say breathable).

One can feel the water on lips skin and nails as water permeate through nails. The henna lip and nail stains are absolutely valid for wudu after application or dye of henna lips or henna nails. Muslim women can perform their Prayer (Namaaz / Salaat)

We did an experiment with our Lip Stains and Nail Stains. First we spread Nail Stain on Filter Paper (same paper being used in laboratory for Filtration) . We kept Nail Stain on the Paper and Cotton for a few minutes, approximate (usual time for synthetic Nail Enamel To Dry),

then we lightly scrape off Nail Stain from Filter Paper (same as we do after henna application).

Then we poured water on the Filter Paper, we saw water dripping through the Filter Paper.

This clearly proves that our Nail Stains are truly porous and are not a coating. The nails remain in completely porous and breathable, allowing water to pass through. We performed this same procedure with the Lip Stain with the same result!

- Our Lip Stain and Nail Stain are perfectly suited for Muslim women to perform their 5 times Wudu {pre-prayer washing) and Salaat (Prayer), because it allows water to reach Nail and lips skin.

Fatwa References from Source: I s l a m q a. com :

Praise be to Allaah.

It is permissible for a woman to colour her nails for the purpose of adornment, with materials that do not cause harm, and there is nothing wrong with her praying with that, unless it is a substance that prevents water from reaching what is beneath it, in which case wudoo’ and ghusl are not valid unless it is removed. If the wudoo’ is not valid then the prayer is not valid.

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (5/218):

If the colour is impermeable( waterproof) , then wudoo’ is not valid unless it is removed before doing wudoo’. If it is not impermeable (not waterproof), then wudoo’ is valid, as is the case with henna. End quote.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

If there is wax, dough, henna and the like on one of his limbs, which prevents water from reaching any part of it, then his tahaarah is not valid, whether the amount is large or small. If there are traces of henna and its colour left on the hand, without there being any solid material left, or elsewhere, or traces of liquid grease whereby water flows over the limb but does not stay there, his tahaarah is valid. End quote.
