Himalayan/Andaraani Salt. Where Does It Come From?

Alhumdullilah, oh so halal sources its Himalayan Salt Products directly from Pakistan. The salt crystals are mined in the Khewra Salt Mine, the second largest mine in the world. The largest mine being in Sifto, Canada, Salt Mine in Ontario. Khewra is located 100 miles south of Pakistan's capital Islamabad, it is the largest and oldest salt mine in the country, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year.

Subhan’Allah, the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan is so beautiful and beyond amazing! Let me tell you why. Inside this amazing gift from Allah (subhana wa t'ala, Glorified and Exalted is He), is a 50 year old masjid made entirely out of SALT! The mine also boasts an electric train for the ease and comfort of tourists to the mine. It even has an Asthma Clinic which offers Salt Therapies.

I found the history of the mine to be so intriguing. I learnt that the Khewra Salt Mine was discovered by Alexander the Great’s troops. In 326 BC, Alexander the Great, the Greek King famous for conquering an empire ranging from Asia into Africa and Europe, was making his way across Pakistan. Stopping his army for a rest in the area now known as Khewra, Alexander's horse began licking the stones on the ground. Seeing that all the horses were doing so and taking note, a soldier himself tried one and found that the rocks were quite salty. The Khewra salt deposits had been discovered!

The mine has 18 working levels and 40 kilometres of tunnels. The Khewra salt mine even has its own fully functioning postal office, for use by the workers and torists wanting to send home postcards :). The post office is built entirely from salt bricks and is the only post office built out of salt in the world! Now tell me, isn't that the coolest thing you've ever heard of?

Remember when I mentioned that the Salt Mine even has it's own purpose built mosque? When, I first found out about it, it totally blew my mind! The little mosque is called The Badshahi Mosque. It's so beautiful masha'Allah. Made entirely out of multi-colored salt bricks 50 years ago for the ease and comfort of the salt mine workers and most recentley also for tourists, to offer their daily prayers in. This mosque has endeared itself to me so much, that it has moved to the top of my wish list. In shaa Allah (God willing) I get to vist this beautiful Salt Mine :)

As well as the traditional mining, for the past three years there has also been an experimental Asthma Clinic at the mine, attracting patients from all over the world. The Clinic claims that asthma patients and sufferers of other respiratory illnesses benefit from inhaling antibacterial salt particles in a sterile environment, which helps loosen mucus and clears the lung passages.

Located deep underground in the mine, the asthma clinic resembles an upmarket guesthouse, with 12 beds covered in white sheets and red blankets in six independent cabins separated with salt bricks and softly lit by lamps. There is a reception area decorated with salt lamps and a lounge complete with a fountain, sofas, and a television set. The walls and roof of the clinic are made from pure salt and a fan helps maintain the temperature and humidity, creating a micro-climate that offers patients relief.

Himalayan Salt, named Andaraani Salt by Ibn Al Qayyim, is mined in Khewra, Pakistan. Ibn Al Qayyim wrote a beautiful article on Gem Salt in a book titled ‘Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Narrated by Ibn-e-Majah on the authority of Anas Radi Allaho Anh "Salt is the syed (best) of your curries". Syed actually means the leader, and why the salt is meant as the leader is because the taste of all curries is dependent on the salt.

Al-Bazzar (in his Masnad) narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa sallam said: "You will soon be (to the people) like what the salt represents to food; and the food's flavor does not become favorable unless there is salt in it."

Al-Baghawi said in his commentary on Quran that Abdullah Bin Umar Radi Allaho Anh related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa sallam that he said, "There are four blessings that Allah Has Sent down to the earth from the heavens, iron, fire, water and salt".

Salt is favorable for people's bodies and food, it is beneficial when blended with any substance, including gold and silver, as it makes gold more yellowish and whitens the silver. Salt decomposes, cleanses, dries the thick humidity, strengthens and purifies the body and helps against open mangy sores.

When used as an eyeliner, especially the Gem salt (الأندرانى Andaraani ~ which is taken out from the mines) will remove the excess fat or flesh and the yellowish color from the eye. Salt also prevents malignant infections from spreading, works as a laxative and helps against Pleurisy when the stomach is anointed with it. Salt cleanses the teeth, prevents them from decaying, strengthens the gums, and makes them firm. There are many other benefits for the salt.

I have used the Pink Himalayan Salt as KOHL & Masha ‘Allah, it enforces the fluid to come out of the eyes immediately. Grind it ultra-fine & then sieve with a muslin/cheese cloth before use. Never apply the ordinary table salt to your eyes!
